Drug-Resistant Bacteria

JAMA. 2007;298(18):2129. doi:10.1001/jama.298.18.2129-b

Legislation proposing a coordinated strategy to fight the growth and spread of drug-resistant microbes was introduced in the House on September 27.

Among a number of proposals, the Strategies to Address Antimicrobial Resistance (STAAR) Act (HR 3697 [http://thomas.loc.gov]) would reauthorize the Antimicrobial Resistance Task Force; establish an Office of Antimicrobial Resistance, reporting to the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services; and create a joint blueprint for antimicrobial resistance research at the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The bill was introduced by Representatives Jim Matheson (D, Utah) and Michael Ferguson (R, NJ).
