College Students View Hookah as a Safe Alternative to Cigarettes

JAMA. 2015;313(5):456. doi:10.1001/jama.2014.18217

A recent survey of Florida college students showed that misperceptions about the safety of smoking with a hookah pipe may account for the high percentage who have ever tried it and those who said they might.

In the cross-sectional study of 478 students at the University of South Florida in 2011 and 2012, 54.4% said they had smoked a hookah pipe at least once and 30% said they would consider it. The investigators reported that 16.3% of the participating students were current hookah smokers and nearly all lived within 10 miles of a hookah lounge. More than 30% had a friend who owned a hookah pipe (Rahman S et al. Prev Chronic Dis. doi:10.5888/pcd11.140099 [published online December 4, 2014]).
