The distinction of being the first printed text on this subject probably belongs to this book, and none of the good features which marked the first edition has been omitted. The book has been thoroughly revised, especially the chapters on abdominal surgery, to which has been appended an excellent discussion of the treatment of general acute peritonitis in which the author favors the continuous saline rectal irrigation and witholding food by mouth for the first few days. The chapters on genito-urinary surgery and rectal operations have been added to materially and a new chapter on the serum and vaccine treatment of sepsis is an excellent review of present-day knowledge on this subject.
