Although the landscape today may include sightings of sleek sports cars and celebrities, it is the natural beauty of the Lake Como environs so esteemed by painter Sanford Robinson Gifford (1823-1880) that still holds sway. If one were seeking all that is lovely in nature as did he, the light-bathed lake surrounded by misty mountains just might do. Gifford’s luminescent works conveyed not only a feeling of awe in contemplating ethereal earthscapes but, in typical Hudson River School tradition, a more spiritual sense of the natural world.
