So the island sun is setting
across the skein of water,
an incandescent layer cake
of scarlet, fire, amber, rose.
High tide arrives on polished feet
framed in lavender, stitched in gold.
On the cabin porch, long after dark
the talk’s of this, the talk’s of that.
By the edge of the meadow
the birches lick honey from the dark
with their twilight tongues of loneliness.
