Undeclared Corticosteroid

JAMA. 2015;313(23):2312. doi:10.1001/jama.2015.6328

The FDA has issued public notifications warning that 4 over-the-counter products promoted for pain relief contain potentially harmful, undeclared ingredients.

The supplements—Asihuri Plus Forte, Ginseng She Lian Wan, Jianbu Huqian Wan, and Saurean Fong Sep Lin—all contain the corticosteroid dexamethasone, according to the agency’s notifications (http://1.usa.gov/1e3Dt0I). Dexamethasone is commonly used to treat inflammatory conditions but can cause adverse events including high blood glucose levels, muscle injuries, and impaired ability to fight infections.
