This is an excellent combination of experimental and clinical medicine. Furthermore, it has the advantage of expressing the personal work of the author. A sufficient historical and bibliographic division, and a comprehensive discussion of modern conceptions of the acid-base balance of the body make it complete. The relationship of alkalosis and blood calcium deficiency to spasmophilia and to tetany is well brought out, particularly in the detailed case reports. The outline of the analytic methods is adequate.
