The increasing interest in the functional study of the liver is shown by the appearance of this volume. In scope and subject matter it is similar to other recent treatises in English and German. The authors are familiar with the work done in other countries, but the references are almost wholly French. As such it is of particular value as a general rather than critical summary of the French literature and point of view in a confused and disputed field. American readers will be most struck by the insistence that the extrahepatic formation of bilirubin is largely a pathologic phenomenon. The formation of urobilin in the tissues likewise is denied by the most recent American investigators. One agrees with the conception of "asynergie fonctionnelle" and the necessity for "l'exploration plurifonctionnelle" in hepatic disease.
