DIPHTHERIA MORTALITY IN LARGE CITIES OF THE UNITED STATES IN 1932TENTH ANNUAL REPORT

JAMA. 1933;100(20):1595-1597. doi:10.1001/jama.1933.27420200003009
Abstract

This report concerns the ninety-three cities dealt with in the recent article on typhoid,1 and the rates are calculated on the basis of the population figures used in that article. The number of diphtheria deaths in each city has been reported to us by the respective health department.2

So far as we have been able to ascertain, tables 1-8 contain rates for all the years since 1890 for which diphtheria deaths are available in the records of the health departments of the respective cities or in Chapin's "Municipal Sanitation." Certain of the five-year averages for the individual cities are based on

figures for less than five of the years indicated. The irregularities have heretofore been marked by footnotes giving the missing years for each city. To clarify the tables, the specific footnotes are replaced in the present report (and the practice will probably be continued in the future)
