Nerves numbed from cutting
the best to save my breath,
now start returning.
Axons, dendrites growing,
reaching back to gather
the sharp knife pain
and duller ache of their rejoining,
are soothed by the simplest help—
moist heat that calms their frazzled ends
like warm ocean tidal pools
where I may sigh and sleep and rest.
