Life grows in layers—
we see them in the patterned trees,
in shells and stones, sediment and seeds,
within the huddled egg and glacial veins,
or in a mushroom from a fallen log
where shadows played.
They are bits and pieces
assembled in time’s vast enterprise
or in the moment of our lives—
They build its whorls
spinning in our fingertips and hair—
no structure, gene, or universe the same,
elusive, ever moving, all akin,
life grows in layers everywhere.
