Anselm Kiefer (1945- ) was born in the small town of Donaueschingen in the Black Forest region of Germany in March 1945, just before the end of World War II. Located in the southwestern part of the country and bordered by both France and Switzerland, Kiefer’s childhood surroundings were lush and fresh but also peppered with wartime ruins. This circumstance could be considered morbid, but it also created a perfect playground ripe for adventure and imagination. It was perhaps these early experiences that primed Kiefer to think of history as a naturally occurring landscape, an uninterrupted plane of forest myths and modern warfare.
