cantankerous grump that one
points the nurse to the mess of stained sheets
and the breathing body beneath
as I approach to say
sir, how are you today

he raises a bony finger with fulvid untrimmed nail
sends a prolonged glare
as though I had robbed him of the years
measured in his forehead wrinkles
