This is a typical continental scientific novel. It deals with the life of an investigator in the field of cancer who finds that even such a love of research as this cannot shut him away from life and the world of women. Eventually he must make the final choice and he chooses, of course, devotion to the needs of the thousands of sufferers whom he can help. The background of the book is that of Amsterdam. It seems to lack somewhat in the qualities that make an absorbing novel.
