Thirty-three years ago, when the first edition of this book was reviewed, The Journal said that it was destined to occupy a large field of great usefulness. The prophecy has been fulfilled. Long ago the book came to be widely used by medical schools and their graduates and others. Bacteriology is a comparatively young and vigorous science, which is still growing, as evidenced by the numerous editions and the gradual increase in size of the book. After the original author passed away, the twelfth edition was revised by Dr. Burrows, assistant professor of bacteriology at the University of Chicago, where the book originated. Now the cumulative effects through the decades of slowly moving developmental processes indicate the desirability of completely rewriting the book.
