CMS Updates Health Care Facility Fire Safety Regulations

JAMA. 2016;315(24):2655. doi:10.1001/jama.2016.7898

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has published updated fire safety requirements for hospitals, long-term care facilities, inpatient hospices, ambulatory surgical centers, and other health care facilities (http://go.cms.gov/1roRjAU). In regulatory changes designed to make long-term care facilities more home-like, the CMS will allow such facilities to place benches in hallways, allow residents to hang pictures in their rooms, and permit stoves in rooms that open into hallways.
