HHS Announces Medical Bill Redesign Competition

JAMA. 2016;315(24):2655. doi:10.1001/jama.2016.7900

In a bid to streamline medical billing, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has announced the “A Bill You Can Understand” design challenge (http://1.usa.gov/1SYJoVD). In this competition, HHS and the competition’s sponsor, AARP, are calling on health care organizations, digital technology companies, designers, and other innovators to create a simple and easy-to-understand medical bill and billing process.

“We are creating progress toward a medical bill that people can actually understand and a billing process that makes sense—progress that includes creating a forum that brings everyone to the table: patients, doctors, hospitals, insurance companies, and innovators,” said HHS Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell, who recently announced the challenge at the annual Health Datapalooza health care conference, held in Washington, DC.
