The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded $260 million in renovation and expansion funds to 290 federally funded health centers across the country (http://1.usa.gov/1Nk28ia). These health centers provide primary and preventive health care services to patients regardless of their ability to pay. The centers collectively care for nearly 23 million patients, and the awards will enable the health centers to increase their capacity and serve more than 800 000 new patients. The 5 states receiving the largest awards are California, $36.8 million; New York, $12.6 million; Texas, $12.3 million; Illinois, $11.8 million; and Florida, $10.7 million.
