After Bypass Surgery

JAMA. 2016;316(1):106. doi:10.1001/jama.2016.1998

the light dim in my cubicle—
the uninvited guest
who had squeezed my heart

so pure I think of prayer
and distant saints of childhood.
A nurse’s mother-face wavers
before my eyes
as she changes my soaked gown.
