Abstract

The eightieth birthday of Dr. William Henry Welch was the occasion for celebrations in scientific circles throughout the world. At the same time hundreds of his friends, including the President of the United States, assembled in Washington at Memorial Continental Hall to greet him. This book contains the addresses that were delivered at the Washington assembly and the greetings from societies and individual friends that were received by Dr. Welch. In the first chapter is a brief account of the celebrations that were held in many cities of the United States and in universities in this country and abroad. Among the speakers at Washington were President Hoover and Livingston Farrand, president of Cornell University, the chairman. Simon Flexner, director of the Rockefeller Institute of Medical Research of New York, and a former student of the guest of honor, after expressing an appreciation of the career and personality of Dr. Welch,
