New Weapon Against Cholera

JAMA. 2016;316(5):485. doi:10.1001/jama.2016.9769

Travelers to cholera-affected parts of the world have a new defense against the bacterial infection. Vaxchora recently became the only FDA-approved vaccine for preventing cholera caused by serogroup O1 Vibrio cholerae (http://1.usa.gov/1XeF73f).

Although cholera is rare in the United States, a recent study reported that cholera is endemic in an estimated 69 countries, more than half of which are in sub-Saharan Africa (Ali M et al. PLoS Negl Trop Dis. 9[6]:e0003832). The study also noted that the illness causes about 2.9 million new cases and 95 000 deaths annually.
