FDA Enlists Physicians’ Aid

JAMA. 2016;316(11):1142. doi:10.1001/jama.2016.12573

The FDA has asked for help from clinicians—particularly dermatologists—as it investigates the largest number of adverse effects the agency has ever received for a hair care product.

From mid-February 2011 to early July 2016, the FDA received 127 reports of hair loss, balding, itching, and other complaints after consumers used WEN by Chaz Dean Cleansing Conditioners. Agency officials said more than 21 000 similar complaints have been lodged with Chaz Dean Inc and Guthy Renker LLC, which manufacture and market the product (http://bit.ly/2bmbPMa).
