Prediabetes Is Being Overlooked

JAMA. 2016;316(16):1638. doi:10.1001/jama.2016.15042

Prediabetes goes undetected among many women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), creating missed opportunities to prevent type 2 diabetes later in their lives, according to a recent study.

Using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data collected from 2007 to 2012, researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago identified 284 women with a history of GDM and measured their hemoglobin A1c levels. About two-thirds of the women said they had been screened for diabetes with a blood test during the previous 3 years.
