Abstract

The subject matter is arranged in sixteen short chapters. To each chapter is appended a selected bibliography and each reference is specifically quoted in the text. In the first four chapters the author reviews the embryology, histology and chemistry of the thyroid gland. The essential facts as we know them are briefly and clearly presented. One chapter gives a summary of the relations of the vitamins to thyroid function and reflects the popularity of the subject rather than any specific relation to thyroid disease. The next ten chapters are devoted to a discussion of hyperthyroidism, its general etiology, varied symptomatology, pathology and classification of types of the disease. Fifteen clinical reports are given in detail to illustrate these types and stages of the disease. Separate chapters are devoted to toxic adenoma and iodine hyperthyroidism.
