In the letter from Rumania published in The Journal, July 11, 1936, the statement was credited to Professor Mezincescu that "50 per cent of infants died before reaching the first year of life, and of those remaining alive only 50 per cent reached the fifth year." He is also credited with saying that the rate of infant mortality is not as low as it was fifty years ago.
