Abstract

The two previous volumes in this series are Thomas Thacher, A Brief Rule to Guide Common People of New England How to Order Themselves and Theirs on the Small Pocks, Or Measels, 1677, and John Morgan, Discourse upon the Institution of Medical Schools in America, 1765. The present volume reprints the presidential address by William H. Welch before the Congress of Physicians and Surgeons in Washington in 1897. Many older physicians will be glad of the opportunity to read (or reread) this brilliant 40 year old essay. In the words of the introduction, the essay is commended "to the attention of present-day students of medicine, to whom it should not fail to bring the pleasure and enlightenment enjoyed by an earlier generation."
