The mental healers included in this extraordinary volume are Franz Mesmer, Mary Baker Eddy and Sigmund Freud. The life of Mesmer reveals the beginning of magnetic healing and the opening of the temple in Paris. It credits Puysegur for his fundamental observations as to the effects of the mind on the body. The life of Mrs. Eddy is a burning analysis of her career which follows the Dakin and Milmine contributions for fact and which shows the manner in which the Christian science group have exploited financially the followers of the high priestess of the Christian science cult. In this section of his book, Stefan Zweig ventures numerous aphorisms as to the features of the American character that directed the extraordinary development of Mrs. Eddy's group.
