This biography of the great chemist who founded modern bacteriology is written simply and with understanding. It has not the brilliance of the book by Vallery-Radot nor is it as scientific as the contribution of Duclaux. It depends on these works for its facts, but neither in the preface nor in any prominent manner elsewhere does the author give credit to these source books. The book is by no means brief.
