In the author's original research on the distribution of the white blood corpuscles within the vascular system the neutrophils and eosinophils but not the lymphocytes were observed to become adherent to the walls of paracapillary veins under certain conditions. Paracapillary vessels are defined as vessels from 0.02 to 0.30 mm. in diameter. A decrease in the velocity of blood flow and an increase in the fibrinogen content of the blood favor this accumulation of leukocytes in the paracapillary veins. Increasing the velocity of the blood flow or decreasing the fibrinogen content may permit release of these leukocytes again. Experimental evidence is presented to indicate that the marginal position of the leukocytes is due to aggregation of the erythrocytes by the factors which tend to produce a rapid sedimentation rate and to the hydrodynamics of the circulation in vessels of this diameter.
