This is an excellent book for anesthesiologists. The articles have been chosen carefully, and the biographical sketch gives a fair portrait of a real pioneer in anesthesia. The foreword and the biographical sketch add to the value of the book, but a more extensive biography might have enhanced the excellence of this monograph. One wishes that Dr. McCarthy had included more comments, analyses, and discussion of the stories behind the papers presented. This book should be read by all associated with anesthesiology, if only for its historical interest. From a physiological and pharmacological standpoint, many of the views expressed are now outdated, but some are surprisingly new and accurate. To newcomers in the field, the ideas presented may be misleading. To the real student, the book brings to a sharper focus the fact that truths tend to become relative with time.
