Abstract

Anesthesiology has developed slowly into a medical specialty. Before the establishment of the American Board of Anesthesiology the physician who devoted his full time and effort to the practice and advancement of anesthesia as part of the practice of medicine was rare except in a few localities. The New York Society of Anesthesiology and International Anesthesia Research Society contributed much to the development of this specialty by helping to bring together and unite anesthesiologists in the American Society of Anesthesiologists. With the formation of the American Board of Anesthesiology and the Section on Anesthesiology of the American Medical Association the specialty has been firmly established in the practice of medicine. Much remains to be accomplished before it reaches full maturity.
