The investigations reported in this volume were carried out in an attempt to determine which pituitary hormones regulate carbohydrate and fat metabolism. The immature pigeon was used in most of the experiments. In some cases doves, rabbits and rats were also used. The data are presented in numerous tables showing the influence of the various hypophysial hormones (supplemented at times by other hormones) on carbohydrate and fat metabolism. The influence of ablation of various endocrine glands was also observed. The results of this study support the view that, in pigeons, very few anterior pituitary hormone share significantly in the regulation of blood sugar, muscle and liver glycogen, liver fat and ketosis. Anteriot pituitary control of these processes is exerted chiefly through corticotropin, prolactin and thyrotropin. Posterior lobe products exert relatively slight effects.
