Shortly before World War II Dr. Veil published an interesting medical study of Goethe and a second edition of this work, containing additional material is now available. The life history of Goethe has of course been painstakingly documented in the literature that has accumulated during the past hundred years, and Dr. Veil has made careful use of the source material in ferreting out the medical and psychologic items of significance. He starts his study with an analysis of the symptoms evident during the terminal episodes, which were apparently due to coronary thrombosis. He then carries through a readable account of the varied medical as well as psychologic episodes that occurred during the lifetime of his subject. The book will be of interest to the student interested in medical history, for it depicts the medical theory and practice of a time with which few medical men are familiar.
