Abstract

The 1960 edition of this book, published annually since 1905, contains descriptions of more than 500 drugs based on appraisals by the Council on Drugs of the American Medical Association. In the preparation of this edition the Council obtained the opinions and advice of more than 250 authorities in the various fields of medicine and pharmacology. Monographs on 45 new agents have been added, whereas 21 descriptions of older drugs or those no longer commercially available have been omitted. New features include a listing of the year of introduction of each drug and an appendix of manufacturers.

Although there are brief chapter introductions summarizing the general properties of the various classes of pharmacological agents, this book is primarily a collection of short monographs on individual drugs. Pharmacological action, therapeutic uses, side-effects, toxicity, dosage, chemical formula, preparations, and trade names are described for each agent. The monographs are accurate, thorough, and
