This is the second edition of a widely accepted textbook devoted to a review of the metabolism and detoxification of drugs, toxic substances, and other organic compounds. The rapid increase in our knowledge of the fate of chemical agents in animal organisms is reflected in the increased size of this revised text. The marked increase in the use of synthetic organic chemicals in all spheres of human activity has produced a concomitant increase in the biologic knowledge of organic compounds foreign to the human body. In the postwar years, knowledge has been acquired about some aspect of the metabolism of most major groups of synthetic organic chemicals. However, the large number of organic chemical compounds now available (approximately 600,000) offers an unlimited field of research on the effects of these agents on plant and animal metabolism.
