This is a new edition of a textbook published in 1940. One of the problems for the American physician in reading European textbooks on treatment is the interpretation of the names of recommended drugs. In this volume, the difficulty is overcome by including an alphabetically listed appendix of all the drugs mentioned in the text with their chemical names, the manufacturer's name, and prices for different strengths and quantities. The author has recommended only those preparations which he has found effective.

The first section is devoted to the fundamentals of treating the patient. The author has covered these broad areas with great lucidity and understanding, particularly the physician's obligation to give his patient support in combatting anxieties and fears. A special section is devoted to the injurious effects of therapy, emphasizing general allergic reactions, harmful effects of cortisone, and commonly prescribed drugs.
