This volume, originally published in Russian in 1958, reviews published work and presents the results of studies by the authors on various aspects of infection and immunity in the irradiated animal. Over half the references cited are in the Russian scientific literature. Most of the emphasis is concentrated on the interaction between the irradiated animal and its usual microbiological flora. Apparently, it is in this area that much of the Russian investigation effort in radiation immunology has been centered. Inadequate data are presented in many instances to permit critical evaluation by the reader. The authors conclude, however, that the biological behavior of the flora changes significantly in the irradiated animal; the virulence and antibiotic resistance as well as the number of microorganisms increase. In addition, changes which favor progression of disease occur in the irradiated animal; bactericidal and bacteriostatic activity of various tissues as well as lysozyme production decreases. The
