The editorial preface states that this book is a compilation of reports given at the First Scientific Session of the Scientific Research Institute for Experimental Surgical Apparatus and Instruments, held in December, 1956, to sum up the first 5 years of the work of the Institute. There are 34 chapters by different authors. Some chapters are remarkably brief; the statements are often quite general; and a dearth of illustrations makes for a disappointing vagueness of presentation. The chapters on artificial blood circulation and on electric narcosis indicate that these subjects are in the same unsatisfactory state in Russia as they are in the United States. The work of translating has been expertly done, but the work as a whole gives an impression of perfunctoriness. The absence of an alphabetical index makes it hard to locate particular items of interest. This book can be recommended only to a few patient readers
