Two major international symposia on pyelonephritis have been published in the United States, one in 1960 and the other in 1965. The present volume adds a third, held in Germany and composed almost exclusively of contributions from Middle Europe. The symposium was divided into several large sections: etiology and pathogenesis, pathological anatomy, pathophysiology, special diagnostic procedures, clinical aspects, special clinical problems, treatment, and prophylaxis and prognosis of pyelonephritis. There is, therefore, a broad attempt to cover the subject and to deal with its many ramifications.

Unfortunately, relatively few of the contributors have made leading primary contributions to the field so that a great deal of the material represents reworking of data already published elsewhere. As is inevitable under such circumstances, the quality of the presentation varies.
