To the Editor:—  I wish to make a few comments concerning the paper by Kory and associates.The authors report a 1.7% CO2 in the inspired air with the use of the Barach-Eckman meter mask at a flow of 6 liters per minute, as compared to 0.75% with the BLB device. Since rebreathing is prevented in the meter mask apparatus, there can be no accumulation of carbon dioxide except that in the small volume of the mask itself, provided that the inspiratory valve is functioning efficiently. Conversely, the entire volume of the rebreathing bag of the BLB device is a reservoir of the exhaled atmosphere of the patient and its quota of carbon dioxide.Although alveolar oxygen samples are more significant than inspired oxygen percentages in testing oxygen apparatus, it will be readily understood that the oxygen concentration of the alveolar air is relatively constant in a patient placed
