When this book first appeared in 1959, it at once became established as the standard work in its field. A second edition in 1963 contained comparatively minor revisions. A new third edition, however, has extensive additions and some new features. The result is to lengthen the book by nearly 100 pages with consequent increase in price.
Important additions are a brief discussion of experimental oncogenesis and all material currently available on the electronmicroscopic findings in tumors of the nervous system. Inclusion of the titles of references makes the bibliography much more easily used. The illustrations have been especially satisfactory from the beginning. They have been retained and 25 new ones added, the majority well-chosen electronmicrographs. Comparison shows that the reproduction of illustrations is significantly better in the new edition than in the second.
