In order for a physician to obtain the advantage of an automated laboratory ordering and reporting system, he must have easy access to the system. The access device or technique should be easy to use and should require no new skills. A television screen with a light-pen pointer was found acceptable. Furthermore, the laboratory tests may be organized in several ways, enabling the user to order appropriate clusters of tests.
