To the Editor:—  An answer to the problem of permanent removal of the toe nail was presented by me 35 years ago (Amer J Surg19:92, 1933). We have used this at the Hospital for Joint Diseases with complete satisfaction in properly selected cases. For unknown reasons some recent textbooks label this operative technique a "Syme's operation."
