The first edition of this compendium of x-ray diagnosis appeared in 1938. Over the years, there has been a remarkable continuity in authorship and considerable conformity in style, arrangements, and format of the several volumes. The present volume on the respiratory system has been enlarged by about 100 pages over the previous edition published in 1957. One new chapter has been added, namely "Mediastinal Tumours." There have been only modest expansions of the chapters on emphysema, fungal disease, the collagen diseases, and the pneumonias. The desirable features of this volume are the same as those for previous editions, especially the clarity and terseness of style that make for easy reading. The illustrations, although not profuse, are well chosen and clearly demonstrate the points made in the accompanying text. The sections prepared by Sir Peter Kerley are particularly distinctive for their shrewd insight and they reflect his vast experience in roentgenographic
