Abstract

The Sixth Congress of the Transplantation Society in 1976 marked the tenth anniversary of the Society. This, in turn, was founded after the seventh and last of a series of biennial International Conferences sponsored by the New York Academy of Sciences. New York City's renowned Waldorf Astoria was thus appropriately selected as headquarters for an enthusiastically attended meeting, dedicated not only to a decade of scientific achievement but also to America's bicentennial celebration. Only 22 papers were presented at the first conference sponsored by the academy in 1954. In contrast, as evidence of the immunologic explosion of the previous decades and the growth of transplantations as a clinical science, 271 papers were selected for presentation to the Sixth Congress.

These papers form the basis for Transplantation Today, volume 4. This volume, however, is distinctly different from its three predecessors. As the Transplantation Society has aged and matured and as the
