Abstract

In the Dec 19 issue of The Journal, an abstract entitled "Autologous Blood in Open Heart Surgery" (JAMA 238:2737, 1977) from Harefuah 93:1-2, 1977, reported that 20 patients who received autologous blood transfusions lost 5% less blood than 27 patients who received homologous blood during comparable surgical procedures. In fact, the patients receiving autologous blood lost 45% less blood.
