Abstract

In Reply.—  The study that McCain and Ebrahim refer to showed LC50 values of isobutylene and butane to be 415 mg/L and 680 mg/L, respectively.1 They fail to state that this article also reported that 16% of the animals died when exposed to concentrations as low as 250 mg/L of isobutylene and 530 mg/L of butane. The article further stated that there was synergistic toxicity when the animals were exposed to a mixture of the two gases. We fail to see how they extrapolated from these data to calculate an LC50 for a 2-year-old child. Second, they suggest that the propellant in our case "could have been A-31." The can, in our case, clearly stated that it contained isobutane, butane, and propane. Further, since McCain and Ebrahim state that a "typical deodorant" contains a minimum of 65 g of isobutane, a 12-kg 2-year-old child could potentially be
