Abstract

In Reply.—  The recommendation for antibody screening, serological testing for syphilis, and hepatitis B surface antigen screening is taken directly from the cited reference.1 Most blood banks require ABO and Rh group testing and antibody screening because of their inherent concern about possible complications and blood mix-ups. The remaining tests are ordered more to protect blood bank personnel than for patient care. Crossmatching is expensive and is not required. However, it is recognized that crossmatching is currently done at many centers with ongoing autologous transfusion programs.Dr Schmidt and I agree in our goal of establishing autologous blood transfusions as a regular form of transfusion therapy.
