The library in the ancient city of Alexandria, Egypt, was so highly prized by the citizens of that community that any ship entering the harbor was held at anchor until librarians could search the ship for manuscripts. Any manuscripts found that were not already in the "House of the Muses," as that great library was called, were taken there and copied by scribes, before return to the ship. Imagine the excitement that would have pervaded the community of scholars who lived in the library of Alexandria if a manuscript such as Obstetrics and Gynecology were to have fallen into their hands.

This book has 86 authors, representing the sharpest minds in 30 universities, including contributors from Australia, Canada, and Switzerland. Practicing obstetricians and gynecologists in the United States will immediately recognize many of the names. Students approaching this list of authors are well advised to remember that we learn most
