Abstract

This book, published in June 1986, is exactly what the editors describe it to be: "... it consists of a set of chapters excerpted from Virology [an earlier text published in 1985]. Its goal is to provide a text for graduate and upper level undergraduate students, researchers, scientists and investigators."

There are approximately one half of the pages in the original and 33 rather than 63 chapters, including 17 introductory chapters covering aspects such as structure, taxonomy, viral membranes, and viral genetics. The only topic from the original missing here is diagnostic virology. Many chapters are excellent; for example, the chapter focusing on defective genomes is as inclusive as any I have seen on that subject. Virtually all of the chapters from the original of clinical relevance and several chapters on uncommon virus types have not been included.
